Fun skill-builder for little hands . After trying three different brands of preschool sticker mosaics, we're sold on The Orb Factory's First Sticky Mosaic series. The sticker boards are made of dense, thick, slightly glossy cardboard. The density helps them stand up to little hands without bending, tearing, or warping. The slightly glossy finish makes it possible to remove and reposition stickers if necessary. The stickers themselves are a combination of foam and jewels. They're easy to remove from the backing and big enough for little hands to handle, but small enough to require some effort -- great for developing fine motor skills.Of the sets we've tried so far, the Fairies set and the Ponies set appealed most to my 3 1/2 year old -- probably due to the inclusion of the jewel stickers. She's enjoyed all of the sets I've purchased for her, but especially loved those two.Comparing this product to similar products, we found The Orb Factory's First Sticky Mosaics vastly superior to Alex Little Hands First Mosaics. In contrast to the Orb Factory product, the Alex Little Hands kit consisted of paper stickers and thin cardstock activity sheets. The paper stickers were difficult to remove from the backing, tore easily, and were virtually impossible to remove/reposition. The one advantage of the Alex mosaics was that each project was packaged individually, making them easy to toss in an activity bag and take along on an outing. The Orb Factory mosaics come with several single-color sheets of foam stickers, and the child must use only a portion of the stickers for each project. If one of the sticker sheets gets lost or if little hands get sticker happy and decorate the living room, all projects in The Orb Factory kit are a loss.Lauri Peel and Stick Jr. mosaics offered more serious competition, but we still preferred The Orb Factory's First Sticky Mosaics. The Lauri product utilizes thick foam stickers in a variety of shapes and sizes; most are considerably larger than the foam squares in The Orb Factory kits. The Lauri boards are glossy cardstock -- less durable than The Orb Factory boards, but still glossy and heavy enough that stickers may be removed and repositioned. The Lauri kits require more critical thinking skills in that children must match and layer shapes to create the desired final product. However, a typical Lauri project makes use of fewer than 50 stickers, and my 3 1/2 year old can complete the entire project in under 15 minutes. The typical Orb Factory project makes use of 100+ smaller stickers and takes her 45 minutes or more to complete. My daughter enjoys both products, but definitely gets more play time per dollar spent out of The Orb Factory products.
