Clean-sharpening pencils and one dirty little secret . Really, the 12-pack of eraserless, seven-inch hexagonal colored pencils has developed into pretty much of a commodity, as witness this box from Mercur of Brazil. I got a box of one dozen for a dollar at an eponymous store. Colors are blue, dark brown, black, green, orange, light green, white, yellow, red, purple, light blue and pink. Mercur's palette is deeper, richer and perhaps a little more true-to-life than a more vibrant palette targeted for little kids and up, like Crayola or Rose Art. Mercur's world headquarters are in Brazil but they have a very active American office. The actual pencils were manufactured in Vietnam. The "lead" (i.e. core) is good and hard and probably a class above the "starter" colored pencils in that manner. The trade-off for this durability is that they don't "shade" (put color down gently, usually with the side of the tip) as handily as softer colored pencils. I am not asserting that Mercurs will last longer than the competition, but at the kind of price they go for any mom or tween can afford to experiment. I myself have had no quality issues as to the shaft breaking or the core shattering.
Even so, as with any colored pencil, it's best to sharpen these with a light touch until you get the hang of it (and if it isn't too much a chore, using a small handheld sharpener usually works best). Now, if you want a color pencil with a ferrule eraser attached, consider Sanford's Col-Erase(R) pencils or Ticonderoga's dozen set of Erasable Checking Pencils (make sure you get the assorted color selection).
**Nonetheless** -- and here's the dirty little secret that might save you money -- Mercurs, in fact most hard-"lead" color pencils are quite erasable with a quality (non-latex) ordinary ferrule-banded pencil eraser. My Mirado Black Warrior pencil made in China erased Mercur tracks that had sat overnight fairly well; my made-in-Mexico Dixon Ticonderoga better yet. And neither one left an orange streak. A small extra advantage is the brilliant macaw that distinguishes a box of the Mercur pencils; for kids starting to develop skill in color and form, copying it is a worthwhile goal. There is so much competition in this complex field that I won't give five stars unless and until I find a brand that excels in almost every way.
