Yep...it's a mess and my daughter loves it! . I bought this for my daughter who was 3 at Christmas last year. I purchased a few extra tubs of sand also at that time. My first thought was that it was horrible because of the mess, it really does get everywhere but she loved it and played with it for long periods of time with me and without.I had a big, plastic cookie tray that we played with it in, that helped somewhat contain the sand. In the summer we moved that stuff outside. It's a wonderful outside toy. Her and my older boys, ages 6 and 8) and all the kids from our neighborhood (ages ranged from 3 - 11) played with moon sand at our little kids picnic table all summer. They used lots of different molds, things they found in their toyboxes and aroud the house and really used their imaginations. My daughter started using her kitchen tools and designing meals, cakes and trays of cookies and brownies. The boys made roads and drove hot wheels through it. I got into helping and coming up with different molds myself.
I suggest having it as an ouside toy or at least having a special table for them inside to play at. A larger, low sided container would be a good investment. It does disappear kind of quick if it's not contained, we had several tubs. You do need to push the sand down, pack it in the molds and it takes shapes well and shows details in it. My 3 year old could mold a pan of individual brownies (with cherries on top)and have them arranged on a serving tray, pick them up with her hands and put them on a plate to serve her 'guests'. It's like wet sand. The area will get messy, your kid will get messy but it's nothing a little vacuming and hand washing won't take care of.
My daughter also asked for more moon sand for her 4th birthday in March. And the only thing she asked santa for this year was moon sand. Even though I don't like it so much inside, we live in Minnesota and it's too cold to be out without gloves on (a heated garage would be a perfect place!) Santa will be buying more for her. They are only little for a short time. The few minutes it takes to clean up is worth the smile on her face and joy she gets out of playing with this stuff.

Cons Review
NOT loving this toy! . This item flew off shelves before Christmas and I can't imagine why. Though I managed to snag a pair of them for my kids, luckily we didn't wait till "Santa" dropped them off to open them up....they were returned the very next day! I equate this toy with basically returning home from a day at the beach with your kids and then having sand in every crack of your clothes, bodies and beach accessories fall out onto the floor. The cool colors don't excuse the annoyance of having sand EVERYWHERE in a matter of minutes once your kids get into this. The plastic sundae pieces are fun to fill with sand, but try to turn them upside down to actually build a sundae, and you'll get my point. SAND EVERYWHERE! It doesn't hold together long enough to create anything, it falls to pieces and just makes a complete mess. Plus, there is no hope you will be able to keep the colors separate once you do manage to put the sundae pieces together. The small fold up mat is not nearly wide enough to contain the sand, and though you can try to pour it all back into whatever containers you choose to store it in, I had my handy dandy Dust Buster out as we cleaned up the wreckage of our dining room table, floor and the kids' clothing, and just headed to the Returns line to get our refund. I gave it 3 stars for FUN only because children always enjoy mixing stuff and getting messy. If Amazon would only add a category: HOW PARENT-FRIENDLY IS THIS TOY? We'd all be better informed!
