Wow so much fun! We love moon sand at our house! . We have several different Moon Sand kits, and we love them. We have this one, and also the amusement park one The Moon Sand Amusement Park Carrying Case, and the dinosaur oneMoon Sand Dinos. It's fun because it's like playing with sand at the beach, only way better because it doesn't stick to your skin, and molds better than regular sand.
Last year when we got our first Moon Sand kit, we used a big cookie sheet (Texas sheet cake) pan with raised edges to do our projects in, so it wouldn't spill into areas we didn't want it to. This year, however, the Royal Castle moon sand kit comes with this cleverly-designed little tray. It is rubbery, and has a nozzle to blow up the edges (like a raft), so that you have little walls around your play area (about an inch high all around). It makes it a lot easier.
The only drawback I'd say with the moon sand is that if you want to do multi-colored creations, it's hard to then separate the colors when you're done. But there's no way to avoid that.
I would think the age of the child playing with it would make a huge difference in how much you like this. Kids 4 and up know enough not to put it in their mouths or throw it, etc. Under that I wouldn't try it.
I should also mention that these have been big hits as gifts at birthday parties, etc. Hope this helps someone decide!
Oh, and here are a couple other tips for you: the moon sand comes in plastic bags that are not re-sealable. So when we are done with the moon sand, we store it in Play-Doh containers. And we also use lots of the molds for Play-Doh kits to make other things with the Moon Sand. We even use cookie cutters with the moon sand! It's lots of fun. I guess you can tell the kids aren't the only ones playing with it....we have fun building things right alongside the kids!

More fun that I thought! . My husband cringed when my son unwrapped this gift for his 5th birthday. A few weeks later, I decided to give it a whirl. Both my 5 and 2 year old sat at the counter for almost an hour playing with this stuff. They didn't have any problem getting the sand to "mold." It is messy, but any toy that can entertain two young kids for almost an hour is ok in my book. My only complaint is it doesn't come with a lot of sand, so I wonder how many times they'll get to use it before there's not enough - oh, and there's no storage container for the sand, but a plastic ziploc baggie works fine.

AWESOME PRODUCT . My daughter was around 8 when she got her first set of Moon Sand. She is now 10, and keeps adding to her collection! She loves it. It is a bit messy, as you would expect playing with sand in the house to be, but nothing a vaccume can't handle easily.
She can play for hours, building, or making houses for her LPS, or Polly Pockets. For the most part, everything stays together when you build it. It's not supposed to be Play-dough, so if you expect it to work the same you will be disappointed. It's made to be like wet sand at the beach.

Fun But a Dissapointment of Moon Sand . This moonsand comes with three colors, but it is so difficult to keep the colors separate, that we just mixed all the colors. It turns into a magenta-y color. It doesn't come with enough moon sand to make an actual castle, but if you already have some it should work. The inflatable mat is kind of flimsy but it keeps the sand off of the carpet and is very easy to blow-up, no pump necessary. Overall, this is a good product.
Messy but nothing a vacume can't fix . I've bought three or four of these kits for my son starting at age 4 and now to age 7 everytime he see's a new one it mom oh mom more moon sands out. The kits are super fun and keep him busy for hours. He loves putting his car and trucks in it and make super race track and monster car smash tracks. I see no draw back to this toy it gets in the carpet but the vacume picks it up no problem and refill kits are cheap to buy so I love the toy and how it gets my son intrested in something else than tv in the winter months.
It's a complete mess !! . I bought this sand to my daughter for xmas. She was happy when unboxing, we tried to do 2 or more molding things with only one sand color, its easy and really they keep its form, but it is impossible to use 2 colors at a time, because they mix together and no one can separate, so, after 10 mins playing you see just one sand with an undescriptible color. This is a completly mess, sand is everywhere, to hard to clean even for me. My daughter played 10 mins, and no more, now she is playing with the other xmas gift: a simple box of lego cubes, much better !!
Don't waste your money with this toy !!!
Didn't come with much sand . For almost $20 this set sure doesn't come with much sand at all, I'm glad I got it when the price went way down to around $5 right before Christmas. It's very fun to play with, never dries out, the other pieces for molding and the "play area" are durable. It is messy if spilled out of the play area, and my kids mixed the colors together within the first 30 mins of play, which is inevitable...just don't expect their creations to look like that on the front of the box after a few minutes of play!
Fabulous Activity . After reading several reviews of the various Moon Sand products I was left thinking that it was too much of a mess and wouldn't stick together so decided not to purchase a set. Then one was on sale and I thought I would give it a whirl. I am SO glad that I did! This was one of the gifts we gave to my four year old for Christmas and he loves it. Is it a bit of a mess? Sure it is, but it is easily swept or vacuumed up and the majority of it stays in the little tray (as far as I am concerned it is far better to clean than playdough which sticks to the floor and gets stuck on shoes and is incredibly hard to get off the carpet if it dries). Ours molds perfectly. It does come apart - like sand, hmmmm....- if you knock it down. I kind of figured that was the point. Kids love to work with different textures and this is yet one more thing that can add to their kinesthetic opportunities. I will purchase more Moon Sand in the future and will gladly pay full price.
As long as you consider it disposable... . Moon sand is fine as long as you get it on clearance or a super cheap Amazon price and consider it a 1 or 2 time use only activity. It is a MESS. It is sand. I don't care what they say on TV about it not being a mess, it is. Send the kiddos outside with it! It does not stick together as well as you would expect (especially based on the commercials.) The pieces the kids create fall apart VERY easily. There is not NEARLY enough sand in each kit.
With that said, if you can get it for about $5 and want to keep the kids busy for a few hours then I'd say go for it. Consider it disposable. I WOULD NOT pay more than $5.
Cons Review Try before you buy...bring a bucket of sand in your home. . It's that easy. If you like your kids spreading sand all over the house, go for it. It barely stays together after molded. If your children insist on playing with it, like mine, send them outside with it. What's next from these geniuses? Looking forward to "Moon Dirt" or "Moon Manure" next.
