Great Item! . My daughter has some problems with fine motor and I think this is great for her, it would be very hard for her to make a friendship bracelet the old fashion way, she would have a hard time keepting the strings in order but the "wheels" that come with this kit make it so easy for her and I'm sure the crisscross action that she does with the strings help with her cordination. The only problem I have noticed is the colors on the wheels is starting to wear off after she has made only 2 bracelets.

Not that great. . This product was less than what I expected. As far as craft kits go, this one is cheaply made and difficult to use. Very fun to make at any age . I am 29 years old and wanted to create friendship bracelets for my friends as a Christmas gift. These were super popular when I was in grade school so I thought the idea would be nostalgic and heartfelt. My friends LOVED the bracelets I made and are wearing them everyday. I had a blast making them and once you figure out the pattern on the wheel, they are super easy to make. Now trying to figure it out the first time is a little tough but if an 8 year old can figure it out then adults should be able to as well. I bought a 2nd kit with new patterns and am still making them!

I love all of Alex's Little Hands toys . I love doing crafty activities with my kids but it ends up really messy after they work with scissors and every thing else. Alex has put together these projects very effectively because the kids can skip the complicated stuff and go right to being creative. I never run out of these because they are great for when my daughter's friends come over. They stay occupied for at least an hour and end up feeling super proud of themselves.

Another great "kit" set from Alex . So far my favorite Alex kit is the bug set, but this comes in second.
The pros and cons are below.

PROS
-each kit is individually wrapped with the needed items in it, so you just grab one of the six and you're good to go, no sorting out the different pieces (a big deal if you have an impatient toddler)
-no glue is necessary, all parts are either stickers or use the bendy pipe cleaners to secure items
-creatures are very cute
-fine motor skills not necessary, these are easy enough for 3 year olds and up to manage.
-simple instructions (visual not text) that even my four year old can understand
-cardboard backing is very sturdy
-bright colors and interesting textures

CONS:
-the sticker sheet has rather small stickers to pull off, and they tear easy. An adult needs to hand the stickers to the kid.
-the stickers aren't repositional, which would be helpful in some cases
-these sets are a bit simpler than Alex's critter/bug set, so they only take about 10 minutes tops per kit. Possibly great for distracted kids.

All in all, these are a great way to entertain a child without needing scissors or glue-minimal mess! Beats playdough!

Fun craft kit for kids . My 3 1/2 year old son received this craft kit for Christmas. I love that everything we needed to complete this craft was included in the box. The "Loopy friends" are 6 different sea creatures - a fish, seahorse, jellyfish, turtle, crab, and an octopus. Each one is packaged in its own bag with the "loops" that you will need. There is one sheet of stickers and illustrated instructions to show you how to make each sea creature.My son was able to assemble these almost completely on his own once I showed him what to do. He did need help with attaching pieces (for example, the crab has glasses that attach to the top of his body).The pieces themselves are very sturdy. When I read "paper pieces" I was expecting something flimsy. Instead, they are very colorful, sturdy cardboard. The chenille stems (the "loops") are varied in size, texture and color for each sea creature. The projects don't last long, but they are perfect for a quick project and short attention spans. I do wish they had included more stickers. My kids tend to over-sticker their projects and it would have been nice if there wasn't a fear of running out before we completed all 6.Overall though this is a great craft kit that kids will enjoy.

Great for beginner weavers . My 10 yr. old learned basic weaving in her school's art class. She really enjoyed it so I decided to purchase a loom she could have and reuse. I chose this one because it had a scarf and purse project which i thought she would like. She absolutely loves this product and has made a small blanket for her American Girl doll and a scarf as a gift for her friend. For the scarf, however, she had to make sections which I had to sew together for her. She would have preferred to make one large weaving, but that wasn't possible. Overall, it's really good quality and we highly recommend it for beginners.

Great for Grammas and Kids . A beginner's project that you can teach your grandchild (or your child). Spend time with your little one teaching them how to start, then just supervise as they 'take it away.'

Minor Changes could have made this much better . We bought this loom for my 7 year old son. There is a problem that should have been corrected to make this loom much more accessible for a child. The shaft bar, which separates every-other warp thread by lifting them up and allowing others to fall into a slot on the bar is too small. The separation between the warp threads is too small to allow for the spindle wrapped with just a couple of lengths of yarn (enough for only 2 - 3 back and forth runs, before needing to be refilled) to pass through. This problem could have easily been solved by the manufacturer by making the shaft bar larger to create a larger gap for the shaft bar to pass through. This problem makes this loom very difficult for kids, and even when I use it, I find it very frustrating. I much prefer the Harrisville Designs Peg Loom, which just uses a plastic needle to weave between the threads - and it's half the price. Another issue with this toy is that I purchased this loom for $47 and it has gone down in price to $31 since then. I would look for a better quality loom if you want one with waft threat separation.Finally, a minor complaint - I bought this loom for my son, but the box art depicts only girls using the loom and includes only yarn with pinks and instructions and supplies to make a purse. Boys like yarn crafts too, and it's a shame to discourage them.

My Niece loves this loom! . This is more than a toy. It opens up a world of arts and crafts. My niece made an awesome purse and is now interested in weaving!

Well worth it . This is a great craft and then toy for girls. The projects are all packaged individually so that you don't have to figure out which pieces go for which food to make. Everything is pre punched for the girl who is learning to sew. My 6 year old and I are working on them together. Some may be harder then others so I've choosen the easier ones first. It will be a project to do over time, adding a different treat each time. I think they will make nice treats for my daughter to play with when she plays with her American Girl Doll. We keep it separated from her other dolls. These are special treats to be handled properly or they might loose their shape. It is not for little girls who toss everything in a pile. It is nice to have young girls things to do with out pushing them to grow up so fast.

Dont waste your money . This is a total waste of money....The string and other peice colors dont make the picture. When you put it together no matter how you follow the direction(which are really bad directions) They dont look anything like the box. It looks like something a 2 year old made. Just search Felt food patterns and buy them on line and make them. Thats what I ended up having to do.

great sewing project for young kids . I bought this for my 7 yr old niece who is starting to enjoy the basics of sewing. Her mom helped her with it and said they both really enjoyed it. Alex is a great brand that I always trust. My daughter saw this and wanted one too, she is only 4. I got one for her and I'm sure she'll be able to do it too with help from her mother who loves to sew!

Great for teaching patience! . I bought this for our 7 yr old and admit it was a little difficult for her. As with any beginning needlework; tangling the thread and making correct stitches can be a frustrating. I think she will enjoy it even more when she is a bit older, of course then I don't know if her interest in playfood will last. Overall, I do enjoy kits like this, it teaches patience, survival skills and is more practical than most toys!

this is not the easy project it should be . I'm working on this with my daughter... this kit was appealing to me because the shapes were pre-cut- I assumed that this would mean everything would fit together properly but I was wrong. And the directions are over-simplified and not very helpful.

Great beginner project! . We bought these for our 6 year old daughter to sew and make for her sisters for Christmas. The prepackaged projects were terrific for a beginner and she was pleased with the results. Each one is easy to make, but did require some adult instruction - that's just what we wanted. For us, it was a great mother/daughter project to create a gift from one sister to another. We keep the food in a special box and it is used for pretend play. My girls don't destroy them and are careful with the food - but it could be easily destroyed if a child were rough - for instance, some of the details are simply stickers - they adhere WELL, but could be pulled off (just like decals on a plastic toy). We were pleased for our family - it was a great beginner sewing project, the food is very cute, and it's great for pretend play, but I wouldn't "just toss the food in the toybox".

Great fun treats . Nothing like a homemade treat for a child to play with over and over. Purchased book so we could make box full of goodies that our granddaughter could enjoy. Fill up a box and give it to her for Christmas. She will have many a tea party with her dolls and/or family. Some can even be made into magnets and tree ornaments,

Great first experience for knitting . I bought this for my 6 year old daughter and it was a good way for her to learn how to knit. The very chunky pink yarn and the huge needles were perfectly sized for little hands. I must say that our success with this product was due in large part to the youtube video from AlexToys explaining visually how to cast on and knit. The video was excellent and my daughter knitted her scarf in no time. (I also learned how to knit from the video!) Her friends are now interested in making the same scarf. If you have a son who doesn't like the bright pink color, you can always buy any super bulky yarn and very large needles and then just watch the video.

kit is great but product colors sent not as advertised by amazon . kit was advertised as multi color yarn( blues, reds, yellows etc) . I ordered it for my 6 year old son. the kit came with pink yarn. I was not happy about this, as he wants to learn to knit and I know he would prefer a mulit color hat and scarf vs. a hot pink one.

Beginner's knitting kit . We found a Youtube video explaining how to knit from Alex company. It was helpful --but also found other online videos to help too.

Great gift . I am giving this to my granddaughter for Christmas, she is interested in knitting as she watches me knitting all the time.

Perfect play dough . I bought the Alex Super Soft Modeling Dough for my 2-year-old. I am a very "green" mother, very conscious of chemicals and toxins that my family might get exposed to, so I try to minimize exposure as much as I can. With that thought in mind, I was only considering Melissa and Doug or Alex for my son. I own several different items from both brands so I know these two brands very well.

I bought the accessory set from Melissa and Doug, which came with 4 small dough cups. Having both brands at hand, I can positively say that Alex is far more superior to Melissa and Doug.

To start with, Alex dough is much softer when it comes out of the cups. M&D was so hard that my husband had to work at softening the dough for my son to play. Then, within few days of opening the cups, M&D started to harden and crumble. We did not have this problem with Alex. They were soft and moist, ready for molding right away. My son didn't need any help squishing the dough, and started having fun right away.

Another difference is that Alex's colors are much more vibrant, which makes it more attractive for my 2-year-old.

Overall, this is a great product, I would highly recommend it.

My daughter loves it . I wanted to order some new play dough for my 3 year old daughter to use with her Alex Toys play dough tools. I originally searched for Play-Doh brand since that is what I played with when I was a kid. Online I was only able to find a kit of small containers (2 ounces) and not a way to get a variety of colors in the standard can size of 5 ounces. It was also very expensive. I was happy when I found the Alex Toys version of play dough. This box comes with 6 different, brightly colored, 5 ounce portions of play dough. It took a little bit of kneading by me at first but now the dough is soft and pliable. My daughter loves the bright colors and now has enough play dough to actually make things. Before she was using the 1 ounce containers of play dough that came with the set of wooden tools. This dough is just as good as the Play-Doh brand as far as I can tell, but was much more affordable and offered a larger amount of play dough (much more useful and fun).

Lots of fun but messy . Instead of following the directions, spend a little time on the internet learning about papermaking. It works best to make your own "mush". a) tear up scrap paper, b) boil it, c) put it in an old blender to mush it (you can control the amount of water this way). It's good to have a dedicated papermaking, old blender because making paper regularly will ruin your home blender! Throw in some flower petals or dried flowers to make it pretty (you need quite a few to have them show). Sometimes it works best to have a basin full of the mush and then put the screen in and pull the screen up, like panhandling for gold. Put the screen on TOP of something so that there is space under the screen (this part is hard to explain---like maybe put something underneath the corners to hold it up) and then, using a sponge, press on the paper to smooth it out and squish the water out. If you want to WRITE on the paper you have to mix some sizing or starch into the must. Instructions are here:

Need to practice . So many of Alex brand creative toys are great. this one isn't. The directions are not very clear and the results are spotty.

fun! . My kids are really into recycling (they're only 3 & 4) so we thought this would be a good tool to take it a step further. It's great! the only caveat is the directions are tricky. I wish they were more bulleted so you could glance at them while you're doing the paper making. But the kids loved recycling their wrapping paper!

A bit disappointed... . I bought this kit for my 5 year-old daughter who loves to make things. I knew she wouldn't be able to do this on her own, but I thought the process would be easier.

The instructions, while they seem detailed and wordy, had to be read and re-read and still were not quite understood. The pulp mixture seemed to have WAY too much water in it, although we followed the recipe. The mesh screen looked like it might detach if we pressed too hard on it, so now we have a messy rectangle of pulp on the kitchen counter that after 24 hours STILL doesn't look like it's drying out at all. Maybe this is more of a summertime project that can be done outside where it can bake in the sun...

I am still hoping we figure out a process that will work with this kit because I'd love to create some paper she can have fun with.

The kit did come with a lot of neat things to decorate with.

Cons Review

Okay . I like the low cost. The mesh screen atached to the wood is a bit flimsy and indents if you push to hard. Which you kind of have to to strain water. Would have been nice if that part was a bit more durible. The paper it comes with will stain everything and make the water a dark purple color if ou use it. Unlike the video paint doesnt do much to change out the color or make i cooler. I dont think this is durrible enough for most recycled paper unless you have a strong blender. But I dont so its tissue paper for me. Overal is fun if your prepared and if you want good pulp without a blender than cut the pieces really really small and soak for a wile or it will look like press board and fall away. I let a couple jars of pulp sit over night so they disovle a bit more and that way its easy-er to use. Still trying to figure out what the extra peice of plastic is for....In a hurry dont have time for spell check lol.

Cute but not well made . My 6 year old daughter loves these slippers, but half the buttons fell off within a week. Cute, great idea, but not well made. Make sure you do not pay a ton of money for these.

Slippers . These slippers are so adorable!! My niece loves them. I had read that the buttons fall off, but so far we have not had that problem. Kids can be rough and if they do come off we will sew them back on,that is an easy fix. My sister has not washed them as of yet,I will keep you updated. We love them so far.

Pushing deceptive packaging to the max . Great idea for a gift: pretty glass beads, and enough to make a few bracelets.
The plastic box is at least an inch thick, implying that there are nice deep containers of beads inside. Nope. A big clear plastic insert holds very shallow containers of beads up high to make it seem that there are at least 4x as many.
I can't say it's a bad product, or a bad gift. Just that this is extremely expensive for basically a few glass beads. Barely enough to make what's in the picture. Maybe not enough to make what's in the picture.

Love these crayons! . These crayons are wonderful. My 2 1/2 year old daughter loves to color. She also likes to color with one crayon for a couple of seconds, set it aside, and pick up another one. Since there are 100 of these crayons, she can do this for a LONG time before she runs out of crayons! There are lots of beautiful colors, too.

Also, since crayons inevitably end up under and/or in furniture, broken, or lost, it's nice to have lots of them--she never misses the ones that are AWOL. Fewer crayons disappear in this set, though, since they're in zippered compartments--much easier to manage than cardboard boxes that get squished and ripped and just aren't as good at keeping crayons inside them.

I really love the portability of this crayon set. It's useful even in the house, but it's really wonderful when we go to restaurants, to relatives' houses, etc. There's no need to pull out a baggie to put crayons in when it's time to leave the house--just pick these up and go!

And, of course, this set also gives small children practice with Velcro and zippers.

Highly recommended!

more than what is described! . This is a great product! I was looking for an affordable flower press to use for homeschooling and when I found this one at such a good price, I thought it would be worth a shot. I have never been disappointed with ALEX quality, so I ordered it. When I opened the box, I was so excited to see that this is a flower press that my kids get to paint themselves! The kit not only includes the parts to make the press, it also includes paint, a paintbrush, and several papers and hemp and wood bead decorations for making crafts with the pressed flowers. There are very clear instructions included. This is a great product for the price and is even more fun because the kids get to decorate it themselves. I give it five stars!

Fun and educational!!! . I had never dried flowers before, I didn't realize it would be this easy. The hardest part is the waiting! My 5 yr old loves to paint and loves flowers. This is the best of both. She got to paint the press and I got dried flowers to use for my scrapbooking!! She has always loved to bring me flowers. We are both really enjoying this new hobby.

Neat gift! . This turned out to be a nice girl's birthday gift. I was looking for a flower press, and this one was geared toward kids and came with accessories, too. Nice product!

More in the box than I ever expected! . Daughter received for 5th birthday. She was thrilled it included nice paints and good brush to decorate the wood flower press with her own style. I didn't realize so much would be included in the box, and it's made so several layers can be pressed and dried at once. This is very nice for the price I see it costs on Amazon. Will be my standard B.day (spring-fall) party gift, especially for girls. (I usually bought wikki stix after school kit for classmates birthdays from Amazon, now I have another option!) Oh, warning...you may even find yourself enjoying this more than your child. :) We kind of did a scavenger hunt to collect nice things to press-was able to open the box and get started, didn't need to gather any additional supplies, no assembly and best of all, a no batteries required!

Neat product . My 8 year old received this gift for Christmas and was excited that SHE got to paint the actual flower press. We pressed poinsetta leaves (because they're so big) and were pleased with the results. The kit comes with art supplies to get you started making your pressed flowers into cards, bookmarks, etc... Nice Education Toy . Purchased this toy to educate about and stimulate interest in local native flowers. Allows kids and adults to craft nice cards and crafts using dried flowers. Purchase before spring flower blooming. The only downside is the SLOW compression method (long screws and wingnuts). This makes collection slow. Easy to lose wingnuts and screws in the field. Would prefer another compression method, but have not seen any on the market.

Love it! . I wanted a flower press to press a few flowers from my wedding bouquet. I was skeptical ordering a kid's item at first, but it had great reviews. It really is great! It is the perfect size, and all the extras that come with it really are neat. I am very impressed with this, and it is exactly what I wanted. I did have to buy several new screws and wing nuts, though, because they didn't twist very well. Also, mine didn't come with washers, and I thought washers would have been a good idea. Less than $3 more spent at the hardware store, and I have a perfect press. I would definitely recommend.

Cons Review

Not much more than supplies . I purchased this kit for my family because it came with "easy instructions" as well as all of the supplies you needed to begin creating. What a disappointment. There were only 11 patterns in the kit and they are so poorly written that you don't know one step from the other. My children gave up in frustration and I couldn't blame them. I was able to create one item only because I remembered some of the steps from years ago. If there were coherent instructions this would be great fun and very educational but it really isn't more than a box of paper.

good but not good enough . This is a great kit if you already like origami because it comes with lots of different sized papers. It gives no information about kirigami except for scissors. We are using it for replacement papers, as it turns out. This makes it very expensive because paper is about .... Not a good value.

Origami . I bought this just for the paper and I got so much more. Its easy to do, and very fun. I have tried origami before and I could never do it. Now with this kit, its fun and the paper is very colorful. I would buy this for anybody really interested in origami.

Look Elsewhere . I also purchased this product because of the easy to do instructions and believed it offered lots to do. I was wrong. There are very few patterns included with the kit and at that, some can be difficult to understand. Definitely, not worth the money.
