Clementine Art Review . I bought the crayons and the modeling dough from Whole Foods and after using the materials with my six children decided to order more from amazon. I was a bit shocked at the review so I just wanted to write one myself. As an artist and an art teacher these crayons are excellent. I simply cannot say enough. They are easy to hold for my three year old and have fallen off her art table many many times without breaking. Also, my sixteen year old who is also an artist fell in love with their blending qualities. The colors are simply beautiful!!! I am ordering a pack of the crayon rocks for all six of my children. They are so creamy and smooth that it is just peaceful to work with these as a medium for many types of creations. Love Love Love them!!

They have their ups and downs... . I do like the fact they are made of soy but I don't think every ingredient is completely "non-toxic". Overall they are safer than regular crayons so I prefer these. My only problem is that they don't seem to wash out of anything. My son is a little older than 2 and he has gotten some on the carpet and on a plastic bin. I can't wash the color out of either of them. They are quite brittle, as other reviewers have stated, but I have managed to melt mine back together very easily. I just light a candle, hold the 2 broken ends over it for 3 seconds to let them melt, then hold the ends together. Once that cools (less than 30 seconds) I melt the outside a bit by spinning the crayon on its side over the fire to give it a nice seal, Voila! Let the crayon cool a bit before giving it back to your child and it will be as good as new.
So, Overall I like these crayons but I recommend them for older children who don't tend to write on carpets and walls.

Shatter-prone! . A note about the phrase "non-toxic."
Many things that are marketed to children are technically "non-toxic," but the definition has to do with a very specific number: how many rats die when fed or exposed to the product within a certain period of time. If the number is relatively low (NOT ZERO), they can stamp "non-toxic" on it and parents think it's perfectly safe to use. Google "LD50" and you'll learn something about it, or go to healthychild dot org, where I've learned a whole hell of a lot about the everyday chemical exposures that we are subjected to that over the LONG run are probably contributing to the rates of cancer and reproductive abnormalities, among many other maladies, in our country.

Remember that ordinary crayons are made of paraffin, which is a petroleum (oil) product. Do you want your kid handling and mouthing something made of petroleum? We make gasoline out of petroleum, and benzene, and other really nasty stuff. And if you've had a chemistry class, well... not too smart to let your kids chew on it, if you ask me.

That's why these soy wax candles are such an amazing idea. The only problem is that if they drop on the floor, they shatter much more easily than your traditional yellow-box mainstream petroleum crayons. So I would save them for an older kid who's not dropping their crayons all the time, like my little one does! A great product for older kids (as in, older than toddlers).
Great coverage but they shattered into pieces . These natural crayons are easy to hold and have vibrant color and nice coverage but one tumble off the table while my 2 year old was coloring (just a drop, they weren't thrown) and they shattered into pieces. Not one crayon made it unscathed, though some broke apart more readily. Unfortunately, I just can't recommend these crayons because of their fragility.

We also own the Stockmar Beeswax Block Crayons - Set of 8 and they are very durable, have good color coverage (not quite as nice as the Clementine) and fit nicely in a toddler's hand. If you're looking for a good alternative, I recommend the Stockmar products (they have blocks and regular crayons both).

We do own some other Clementine products - namely the paint and the modeling dough and we quite like those so it's a shame the crayons aren't better.
Easy to hold for 16-month-old . I bought these crayons for my grandson at Whole Foods because they were (a) non-toxic, and (b) a size held easily by a toddler. When I got home, I found one in the box was broken but I didn't have time to return them, so I lit a match, melted the broken end of each piece and stuck them back together. These are the first crayons my grandson ever held and he didn't know what to do with them at first. I showed him, but he was far more interested in tasting them, which was what I expected him to do. However, after watching his hero, Elmo, draw with crayons Elmo's World - Singing, Drawing & More he grabbed one and began to use them on the paper I'd set in front of him. I give these crayons the highest rating for size and the colors are fine, but the breakability seems to be an issue. They DO break and for that reason, my next order of crayons will be Beeswax Block Crayons (Set of 8). NOTE: my grandson DOES use the broken bits to color with, but I'd rather he didn't have to.
Highly breakable but worth it. . Don't buy these crayons if your kid is the type to get easily upset by things like crayons breaking. These break really, really easily. The first time we used them, all but one broke from falling off our slightly off-level kitchen table. I still love them, though, because they are totally natural, and I value that and want to support businesses that produce natural products. Their weakness is also their strength: because they're so soft, they produce a vibrant color that "pops," even on black construction paper. I'll keep buying them. Wish the company would come out with a set that included more colors!
break too easily . they color beautifully, but it's just silly how easily they break. the box arrived with 4 of the 6 crayons broken, and within days, they were all in tiny pieces (not from being thrown or handled roughly, mind you, but from 18-inch falls from my toddler's drawing table). the shape is lovely and easy to hold; it's a shame that they're not in that shape long enough for it be of any use. the tiny broken pieces are barely usable for my daughter. a better choice for an older child who doesn't ever drop her things. (does such a thing exist?)
Great crayons! . I'm so glad I didn't get the Crayolas. These are plenty colorful, durable and I'm betting they're going to last a while. They also don't stink like the chemical crayons. Love that these are available!!

Cons Review
Simple Color . Basically, I bought these as they are non-toxic. Though they aren't the 2000 color Crayola box that I had as a child (with a sharpener in the box!) - they ARE safer. And peace of mind is far more important to a mom that 86 shades of blue. My only issue with these crayons is that they break very easily as they aren't wrapped in paper. When I buy the next box I may wrap a plaster around them. A BPA free one.

Break easily . These break into several pieces when dropped just a few feet. The colors also are not "brilliant", just normal. The red actually looks more pink than red but I didnt mind it.
Also, these crayons are not 100% soy wax, the company will not tell you how much is soy, and they dont even know or CARE if the soy is GMO!
