Prang be-bè Jumbo Colored Pencils with Sharpener

The Prang be-bè line is specially designed for tiny hands and giant-sized imaginations. The pencils are thick and short for ease of handling and encouraging proper motor skills. Pencils are approximately 1/2 inch in diameter and 4 inches long. Prang be-bè Colored Pencils are a great alternative to traditional crayons. The colors are smooth and vibrant (even the yellow is bright. No undue pressure is necessary to achieve a satisfying hue.) The points are unlikely to break; pencils have a 1/4 inch color core. The wood body will not break as crayons do. The size of the pencils encourages proper grip technique.

Because the pencils are intended for children under 36 months of age, the blunt ends of the pencils are capped with well-secured plastic caps providing easy color identification and a "chew" barrier. Despite the highest degree of vigilance, children always seem to find a way to get things in their mouths. The hard, non-removable plastic caps prevent your child from being able to chew on the wood/color.

Perfectly designed soft lead easy glide and beautiful colors . If you are looking for bright, medium soft lead crayon to reinforce your little ones efforts at drawing or scribbling, this is the perfect drawing and coloring crayon. I actually like these WAY better than wax crayons because they are practically indestructible, more brilliant and glide more easily across the paper. They also create less mess and are erasable. My son, who is seven, and has trouble with fine motor skills, finally loves drawing and coloring. My toddler, who is 2.5, can't wait to get his hands on these 'special' crayons at art time. Whether you have a child who has fine motor difficulties and needs encouragement or a toddler who has drawing efforts you want to reinforce, these are great. I only wish they made a pack that included more than six colors.

Formulated to wash from skin but not clothing or porous surfaces . 'Washable' is a misleading adjective for this product, because it states on the back of the box that it is "formulated to wash from skin, but not from clothing or porous surfaces. Staining is possible on synthetic fabrics."

I tested the Prang metallic pens against another brand, and they are:

- less expensive
- sold in packs of six colors, as opposed to five for the more expensive brand
- produce a broader, more uniform line
- dry more quickly on glossy surfaces such as photographic paper

Both brands are advertised as archival, and both can be used on dark or light paper, but I would definitely recommend the Prang Metallic markers.

Bright colorful & washable . LOVE these markers. They are hard wearing, washable & colorful. Was first introduced to Prang products with the crayons as our younger children loved to eat crayons & so I was looking for products that were not petroleum based (Prang crayons are made from Soy Bean Oil). This is the BIG watercolor set: 16 colors . The product pictured here appears to be a set of eight watercolors, but this is actually the SIXTEEN watercolor set.

These Prang watercolor sets have been around forever *like me*--my old sets came in black metal cases, though. We used them in all of our school art classes. They are still the best for quality, economy, portability and ease of use.

The instructor of my adult art class instructed me to get this set for my water coloring. Another "art materials" website has this set on sale right now for around $8 plus shipping. Amazon's price is a couple of bucks more, but you get free shipping for orders over $25. Anyway, you're going to need some nice watercolor paper, and maybe a good brush or two, plus an instructional book, if you want. Get everything you need at the same time, and pay no shipping. Easy-peasy!

OFTEN TIMES YOUR OLD FRIENDS ARE YOUR BEST FRIENDS . My goodness where to start? Prang watercolors have been around for years and years. I have been around for years and years; not as long as Prang, but long enough. I can remember using them when I first started and that was actually in the late 1940s. Since that time I have progressed beyond smearing colors around a piece of paper until I arrive at a glorious dark mess that sort of runs off the paper but that my mom said was "beautiful" anyway. Well, truth be told, I have not progressed much beyond that, but there never-the-less has been some little improvement and I suspect my mom would still tell me my messes are beautiful; her, if no one else.

Anyway, over the years I have used a lot of different paint. Some of the paint has been obscenely expensive..."professional grade" and all that. Some of these paints were very nice; no doubt about it. I still use them often. But I have to tell you that I have never stopped using Prang and continually come back to it. You simply cannot beat the intensity of color and blendability, and you certainly cannot beat the cost for the quality you are getting. As so often happens, the "snob appeal" overrides our logic and good judgment...sometimes cheaper is indeed better; or at least just as good.

These paints are absolutely ideal for the beginner (In reference to the particular set being reviewed here). You are given a large enough palate so that the beginning student is not overwhelmed with trying as many different blends as you are with the smaller selections. These paints are ideal to use in a school setting as the clean up is a snap and if the student is half way good, then their painting will look pretty darn fine also. I find with the broader choice and the "pop" the color gives, the incentive to keep going is much greater for younger students.

As to older students...due to cost this is an ideal set. If they find out that watercolor is simply not for them, then there is no great loss. When teaching I dislike very much having to share paint (One of my personal hang-ups) and these are ideal for that.

One tip though. The brush that they include with this set is horrid and down right useless. Go ahead and spring for some nicer brushes....hey; you save so much on the paint, you should be able to afford it.
Also remember, if you are just starting out, or if you are teaching...even the little ones, a good quality paper is a very, very wise investment!

Some of the best watercolors around. . I am an experienced painter, and I am familiar with many brands. My main watercolor kit includes winsor newton artists watercolors and a set of series 7 brushes. Right next to those expensive supplies sit two prang watercolor sets. I always use prang in my paintings. It's cheap but it is also some of the best paint I have ever used. This is a must have for anyone doing watercolor.

Excellent Product . I was very pleased with the product and the prompt service - and the price was great! I have been taking watercolor classes for over a year and started with this Prang product. I have tried other more "professional" watercolors, but everyone continues to compliment my watercolors for their vibrancy and color. Even the teacher has pointed out what a great product that has been. I highly recommend both the product and this company. Good combination.

Prang watercolors . I could not get over the intensity of these watercolors for the price! Incredible! I'm using them constantly in my art!

One of the best kept secrets . You know what? Prang is usually marketed for kids in the school supply store of your local big box retailer, but it's good stuff. I've never had any problem with them in all the years I've used them. They are not my first choice, but they work great in a pinch. If you are just getting some watercolors for your kid, then forget Crayola and get these instead. Just throw this brush away as it will not produce very good results.

Fantastic for the price! . I'm really pleased with how vibrant the colors turn out to be. I made sure to read all the reviews for this product and I gotta agree with the others. The brush is kinda crappy though, the hair keeps coming out when I try to paint. So just get a couple of good brushes, and you're good to go :)

Great Pens . We really like these pens. I like that the colors are different then the regular crayola pens. They last a little longer then the crayola brand. These are the pens our school Art Teacher prefers in class. Will buy again.

Stay within the lines . These are hands-down my favorite markers in the lower-end price range. The colors are nice and bright and the pens last quite a while without drying out. The pens also produce a fine line that is suitable for smaller detail work, although they aren't quite as good for coloring larger areas. Overall, a great value and suitable for coloring and drawing enthusiasts of all ages.

Great Markers for Grading . As a 9th grade English teacher, I love these markers! I use them all the time to write comments and grades on papers. There is a wide variety of unique colors, and I have used them as fine tip highlighters as well. They last much longer than other fine point markers that I have used for the same purpose. To get better quality, you would definitely have to pay more. (Probably wouldn't be great for coloring in large areas though)

Made in Italy . Excellent markers for the price. I like these better than Crayola - a slightly finer tip with better control. But they are very similar otherwise. This set contains all the basic colors: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, brown and black. A very nice fine point and good color. Made in Italy.

Looks like watercolors on paper. . The finished project looked like I had done a watercolor painting. Colors are very nice but I wish they had included a white or even off white in the pack. I appreciate idea that I can do fine lines and fill in larger areas with the same pen. I am very pleased with this product and I am now looking to find a set with different colors including white. Please let me know if such a thing should become available on Amazon.

These aren't bad . I am a college student, and I can't be dishing out large quantities of cash to get pen brushes. These worked perfectly for me, just let a layer dry before you apply another. They are fine quality, no complaints here. These pictures aren't going to last a hundred and fifty years, but I'm not complaining.

The colors remain really bright on standard copy paper (I copied from my book of illustrations) even after being exposed to light, and I find the brush tips to be the right thickness, as you can use the fine point or create larger strokes to fill in bigger areas. This is really a nice set.

meh . The pens are vibrant and work with fine lines. I rated it a three because one of the pens were dead on arrival.

way softer tip than I expected. . Nice pens if you know what you're expecting. I probably didn't look closely enough myself, but I didn't expect the tips of these brush pens to be so soft. They're pretty swoopy, hard to write with. I was hoping to make arty cards with text in them, but it's hard to write anywhere close to small with these pens. Big brush strokes, yes. The colors are great, the ink is good. Prang makes great stuff. Just don't expect that these are anything like 'pens', as they are much more like paintbrushes. Which is cool, if you're expecting that.

Cheap but the doesn't touch the soft tip of Tombow . The product is cheap and you are getting what you pay for. I bought it for my two kids at 2 and 5 for drawing and coloring. The brush tips can be easily damage in the hands of my kids, especially the 2-year-old, and the ink do not last very long. The dual tip Tombow pens, 3 times more expensive, but is much more durable, and so far sustain the abuse from my two-year-old boy.
