Creative Fun . My daughters, 3 and 6, received this as a gift. I hadn't heard of the presto dots, but had used model magic before. Both girls loved it and after reading the directions and giving them a short lesson on how to do the dots, they were off. My 3 year old sat for over an hour (which she never does) and created both her characters. She liked using the stamp and did a good job with the dots by herself. My 6 year old really got into it and had a great time adding details. The instruction book showed a lot of examples of how to make eyes, noses, etc., but my kids liked coming up with their own. I love model magic because it doesn't make a mess and keeps the kids entertained and using their imagination.
Crayola Model Magic Presto Dots Monsters Reviews
Great Idea...Poor Design . After seeing a recommendation for this toy in a parent's magazine, my daughter (6) asked for and received this toy as a birthday gift. From the package it look like lots of fun; simply stamp out a dot and pop it out onto the base, simple. Well the reality is quite different. Once you stamp out the shape, especially the star, the dough get stuck in the stamper and does not simply "pop" right out onto the base. Other times the shape does not stay in the stamper and has to be placed onto the base by hand. It is a disappointment because this seemed like a fun idea and was reasonably priced. In use, however, it's not worth the money, at any price.
Crayola Model Magic Presto Dots Monsters Opinions
Model Magic . I would like to advise you all to make sure you use the mat that came with it or else you too might end up with a huge purple stain on your kitchen table. I had to call Crayola for a remedy to get it off... and some of it is still there... other than that the kids had a blast with it.
Model Magic. . My brother really likes this stuff. He's really into modeling clay with a lot of detail. But this is a fun break from that.

Cons Review
Presto Dots - Great fun once you figure out how to use them! . My daughter saw these in the store and wanted them for Christmas. Santa obliged! We read the directions and began creating our monsters. It was pretty difficult. I seemed to be able to get the dot to fall out of the tool but my daughter couldn't. I re-read the directions VERY closely and realized we made a simple mistake. The model magic dot is supposed to STAY in the tool (see detailed directions below)! Once we figured out our mistake, the presto dots became by far the easiest modeling we'd ever done! The model magic itself is very easy to work with. It is very light and easy to mold. The colors provided in the kit are vivid - red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple and white. The white is used for a base to cover the monsters. There was plenty of model magic provided. The kit includes the bases for two monsters (one with an oval body and one with a round body) and two presto dot tools - a dot and a star. There is enough model magic to make the monsters and a few additional figures. We made quite a cute pig using the model magic dot tool to create a wild nose! Crayola provides examples that really help spark creativity. They show fully created monsters along with sample noses and ears. It really helped us come up with our own ideas. In about an hour we had used all the model magic and I'm online now looking for our next model magic kit!I gave the presto dots 4 stars only because the directions weren't quite as clear as they could have been. From the prior reviews, it looks like a few others headed down the path of trying to pop the dot out of the tool just like we did! Pictures would have really helped.Detailed Directions: Wrap the monster in some of the white model magic (about 1/2 a package). Take a color and press it or roll it out to about 1/4 - 1/2" thickness. Push the dot tool into the colored model magic, twist and lift up the tool - KEEPING THE DOT INSIDE. Next, lightly press the tool (with the dot inside) against the model magic wrapped around the "monster". Remove the tool. The colored dot will "stick" to the white base on the "monster"! After two or three tries this entire process takes just a few seconds.
There are better toys out there . This was received as a gift and we've found it pretty disappointing. This particular kit includes enough model magic and the bases to make two creatures. Like the other reviewer, we found that the tools to make the dots and stars didn't work very well. The dots and stars would either get stuck in the cutter or not stay in the cutter long enough to stick on the creature the way they were supposed to. Because of this, once the dot or star is placed on the creature it is often bent out of shape. Once it's on there, though, it can't be removed without sticking to the base color and messing up all the colors. I guess the bottom line is, we found it pretty impossible to make anything resembling the picure on the package. On the positive side, the feel of the model magic is neat. It's more airy than play-do. It comes in fairly small packages of about 5 different colors. Just a note, it does dry out when exposed to air. The idea is to make the creatures and let them dry, so this isn't something meant to be played with more than once. My kids had a moderately good time with it for about a half and hour. Since it was a gift, I don't mind, but I wouldn't buy it myself.
