beautiful but NOT water-soluable! . I ordered these crayons thinking that they would be similar to the Neocolor II, which are effectively watercolor crayons and can be diluted with water and used like a watercolor paint/pencil.

These are NOT water-soluable- in fact, they heartily resist water! They are very sturdy and high quality crayons, beautiful shimmering colors. In order to "wash" them you will need to purchase a "blending pen" (I found mine in the art aisle at a local Michael's- it's designed for use with colored pencils) or a can of Gamasol mineral spirits and use it with a paintbrush. I also tried using a blender pencil with them (used for color pencils, also found in art aisle at Michael's) with no luck. I'm not sure how a blender pen for markers would work.

If you like the look of crayons or pastels, and are willing to purchase the tools you would need to blend these crayons, I recommend them. But they definitely aren't watercolor crayons!

Love crayons . This product is a savings for me! I have been using copics for 1/2 a year already. Now I find that water colour crayons are even better. The price is reasonable and the crayons can last longer. My friend has a set which is already 5 years old and is still looking good. That's why I decided to switch to Caran crayons.

Professional Quality Art Supply . Toy is a misleading word here. Although easily used by children with great results, just as suitable for Adult hobbyist or even professional artist. Colors are brilliant and formulation very smooth.

Wonderful watercolors . The colors are fabulous. They blend very nicely. Great tool for use in watercolor artwork. Well worth the extra money they cost.

Not a toy but great for serious budding artist . My daughter loves these watercolor crayons and has produced great work with them.
They are not for the casual user as the price tag would make them an expensive hobby.
But they are wonderful for those who will take them seriously.

Caran D'ache Pastels . These pastels are the most fun art tool I have gotten my hands on. I love that you can dip them into water then stroke them over the canvas for a rich watery effect, dry for a rough traditional pastel look, or you can also spray it once it has been laid on the canvas and rework it. I love using them to sketch out my composition then go in with acrylics and they melt into the acrylic creating wonderful shaded edges. Most fun you can have with a crayon! One thing I do find though is they seem to take a bit to get them going. Like they have a coating on them.

Serious Artists' Toy . Not sure where I heard about this product, maybe Quilting Arts Magazine. These water soluable crayons are easy and fun to use. They solved my resistance to purchasing another round of dyes for cotton on my small art quilts. These crayons work similarly to water colors. I've experimented by applying/rubbing to dry and damp fabric. Not sure if there is much difference in the end result though they transfer to damp fabric much easier. I imagine these colors will work a little differently with each type of fiber, fabric and weave. Apply the color to the fabric from the crayon stick, mixing colors side by side and over one another if you please. Then add water with your brush of choice (I like a foam brush best so far) or spritz to dampen all first. Each stick/color carries its color differently. I found some of the lighter colors to be more dense than the darker colors. So, if it makes a difference to your project I'd suggested testing each color stick for its covering qualities first. Hang or lay flat to dry to see if you applied enough color. Reapply if necessary. A good pressing sets the colors to the fabric.

The best! . The colors are vibrant, and blends well with water or gesso. I started with a 10 piece set, and now I have the 40 count. I love each and everyone.

Quality+ a great product . In taking a collage art class the instructor recommended this and I am totally pleased with the way I can erase any misplaced lines easily and it wont show as erased. A quality product worth the price.

This is a professional art product. Superb Quality . These Caran d'Ache Neocolor 11 water soluable pastels are not a toy. They are fine quality drawing materials for the professional artist as well as the amature. Colors are light fast. Use on any high quality paper, leave dry or convert to watercolor by using a wet brush.

RAD . You can write on your own skin with these crayons.

You heard me. Dip them in water, draw on your skin, wash it off later with water. Like the coolest temporary tattoo EVER.

Wonderful medium . This is a wonderful medium for working on paper. The Carn d'Ache company also makes Mr. color Face Paints, which work the same way yet use pigments that are 100% safe for using on skin. According to them, the watercolor crayons contain pigments that are not. They nonetheless excite users of all ages as they glide onto paper in bright colors after simply dipping in water.

Great colour brightness . This products only fault is that it comes under the category of "Toy" ??? Not sure about that Amazon. Anyway, I'm very pleased with the colour brightness and coverage of this product. The pastels are very smooth to work with and are so easy to work with in a sketching type fashion as well as blending colour. I would consider buying a lot more of these to increase my colour range. The price is a bit much when you see the size of the tin they come in, but the quality of the product is there.

They make nice face paints! . I purchased these for a children's event that I volunteered to do face painting for. All I used was a small container of water, a paper towel to blot off excess and a mirror for the kids to see their designs when done. No messy brushes! This kit had all the vivid colors I needed and I just sharpen them with a pencil sharpener when the tips get dull. Glides on skin easily, blends in and can use one color on top of another. They dry quick too. Easily comes off skin with a wet wipe or soapy water.

Great Great product! . I used Caran D'Ache watercolor crayons as a child for ALL my face-painting needs...my mom worked at a specialty toy store, so we got a sample set to try out. All these years (15!) later I have my own kids and had to dig into my memory bank to remember those amazing "face paints" that I once used. I googled the name and found them for the cheapest price at this site. I KNOW they are not technically to be used for face painting, but WOW do they work great! Love, love, love them. After painting an entire class of kindergartner's faces, they still look like brand new. A little goes a LONG LONG way. Highly recommended if you can ignore the price a bit...but they are worth it!

Excellent quality but not really "metallic" . . . . These are nice drawing pencils, but they are not metallic in any immediately obvious way, so I am not certain to what "Metallic" actually refers . . .

I thought that they would have lead that looked like metal, perhaps with some tiny metal flakes, but they look pretty much the same as the Prismacolor Premier Softcore and Premier Verithin color pencils, which I really like . . .

For reference, what I wanted was silver and gold metal "stuff", so after trying these "metallic colored pencils" and not being able to see anything obviously metallic I did a bit more searching and recalled that there are labeling pens that have an ink like Testors metallic paint, which is the look I want, so I ordered a few sets of Sanford Oil-Based Gold and Markers, which work very nicely . . .

The Sharpie Oil-Based Gold and Silver Markers are different from drawing pencils, and since they are oil-based you need to allow time for drying, but this is the look I want . . .

Another strategy is to get the Testors All-Purpose Gloss Enamel 8 Color Paint Set (SKU# 9146X), which has both gold and silver enamel, although the Amazon.com listings for the kit only show 7 colors when there actually are 8 colors and a bottle of thinner. The TCP Global kit is the correct one, but finding it via searching Amazon.com is not so easy, so you have to select one from another source and then put the TCP Global kit in your shopping cart to get the correct link where you can see the photograph that matches the kit at the Testors Paint website . . .

Testors also makes acrylic paints in metallic colors, so if water-based works better, then try acrylic . . .

I like Testors metallic paints (gold and silver, specifically), because they have a soft, distinctly metallic lustre . . .

The Caran d'Ache Fancolor Metallic Colored Pencil Kit is nice, and it is professional quality, so I will use it for drawing but not for this specific type of metallic enhancing . . .

Best Face/Body Paints . My aunt who is a professor at an art school in Boston gave these to our family as a gift when I was a child. She said that they were ideal for face painting and they are!!! We played with our set often for years and the pastels are still in good shape and we now use them with my children. I just bought my own set to have at my house and I anticipate my grandchildren playing with them. I LOVE these pastels. They are easy to use and as mess free as face paints get! We were able to use them unattended in grade school (age 6 or so). We loved coming downstairs and showing off our face creations to our parents. My mother is an artist and enjoys using them on paper, alas I did not inherit the artist gene and my only experience is with face painting. I highly recommend them!
