Hypotrochoids are mathematical curves traced by a point in a circle (your pen) rolling around the inside of a bigger circle. These curves have been studied by mathematicians for centuries. This drawing set makes it fun and easy to draw these designs and you can create endless designs using the gears provided. The set includes two hypotrochoid templates each with three gears plus one ea. red blue and green pens. The whole set comes inside of a reusable tin.

Beats paying for overpriced Spirograph! . I didn't know that the mathematical description of these patterns was "hypotrochoid", which is a new word I hadn't heard before. Although I admit that "Spirograph" is easier to pronounce and spell, the Hypotrochoid Art Drawing Set accomplishes the same functionality as the Spirograph at 1/5 the price. That way, when your child loses interest in the set, as all kids eventually do, you've saved that other 4/5 of the purchase price to use for other toys. Excellent!

Hypotrochoid Art Set Reviews
Adult Fun . I wanted this so I could remember the fun I had as as a child with a similar type toy. I really do enjoy making spiral images with this kit. (I'm a kid at heart!)

Hypotrochoid Art Set Opinions
Broken Pieces First Use . The pens cracked just above the tip within 20 minutes of using this toy - with only two adults using them. Kit comes with 6 "gears" but it's really 3 sizes, two of each. In a more complicated set two gears with the same size but different holes would make different shapes, but they're too simple for any difference. It's a cheap kit, yep, but I wish I'd put the money towards a better set instead.

I have purchased a few different sets. . . . On a recent trip to a local store, I found a Hypotrochoid Art Drawing Set, which reminded me of the Spirograph that I played with as a child. The packaging was sealed, but it was on sale, so I went ahead and purchased it. Wish that I had seen the images here on Amazon first - it comes with 6 gears and 3 frames - but it's actually 2 sets of the same 3 gears, and 2 of the frames are the same size. (The holes in the gears are small, so only the 3 pens that come with and Pilot Precise Extra Fine V5 pens - which are more expensive than the set - work.)
Next, I found the Create Your OWN Spiral ART kit at another local store. Also sealed, this one has 2 frames and 5 gears - problem: because of the teeth on the gears, only 2 large gears fit in the large frame, and 3 small gears fit in the small frame. The teeth on the gears are large, so they don't really slip the way that the old Spirograph kits did. The shapes are interesting and most pens work with it, so it works pretty well.
Thought I had finally found my answer when I saw the Cra-Z-art Spiral Set from the photo on the box, and the product photo that shows gears of multiple shapes (football, plus sign, etc). The set that I received included 3 frames (round, oval and kidney bean shaped) and 7 ROUND gears of varying sizes (the number of teeth are marked on each gear - 17, 18, 22, 27, 29, 30 & 33.) No other shaped gears - just round. One good thing about this set is that the holes in the gears are large, so just about any pen will work. For the price of this set (and since I'm an Amazon Prime member, I received free shipping) I'm not unhappy.
But at this point, I wish that I had put all the money that I had spent on all 3 sets and the Pilot Pens together to find an old, real spirograph set.

A Pocket SpiroGraph ! . Very well made for the price.Lots of fun to use.Fits in a coat pocket or pack with ease.Amaze Your Friends.Never Be Bored Again.
Fun Starter Set But Left Wanting More . I bought this for my almost 7 year old for Christmas. She finds it difficult to hold the outer stencil still by herself, but enjoys creating spiraling patterns with the help of Mom or Dad. It's great that it packs away in a small tin for travel and has been very useful for keeping daughter #1 entertained at restaurants and waiting rooms. I wish Hasbro would bring back the vintage Spirograph from my own youth. This is a good starter set, but I was left wishing for more.
Could be better...... . I bought this toy for my grandchild and I couldn't help but to try it myself, as a child I enjoyed hours of fun with it but I remember the disc gliding in the gear and now it's so difficult to keep the gear engaged, the disc continuously slips and skips out of sync. I also prefer a sturdier set, and a single gear per disc will make it easier for little hands. I believe this is a toy that shouldn't die.
Fun inexpensive toy . This is a fun little toy, compact and sturdy plastic in a metal tin hinged box. Easy to use, just a few gears and a few pens, but not expensive.
Set works best with a mechanical pencil or thin tip pens.
Buy it for the fun, it is not the EVERYTHING set you had when you were a kid. It is really small sized so don't expect the big spirals.
Still worth 4 stars overall for quality of the box and gears.

Cons Review
1/100 the fun of the real thing . I saw this shrink wrapped and bought it on impulse in a store. Now I'm on eBay, looking for the real thing. If you had the big set when you were a kid, just put your $ toward the original product--there are still plenty on the market.
1. Although the kit contains six disks, they are actually 2 each of three different sizes.
1A. The gears are opaque, so if your design is smaller than the gear itself, you can't tell when you've completed a repeat.
2. Although the kit appears to have three master "holes" or frames, two are the same size, so you only get two different masters.
3. There's no gear teeth around the outside of the shape, so you can't make designs any bigger than the inside of the frame.
4. Not sure why colored pens are such a big deal; basic gel pens work just fine for me.
So--If you've never played with a spirograph, this set might get you started. If you want the real thing, go get a vintage set (check the reviews on here for the current, 2010 or 2000 version--not as good as the 1969 kit).

This was great . My 4 year old son loves this "toy". He has been making "spirographs" for his teachers and friends. He just loves it.
